A time line with TimeToast


Learning objectives of the activity

  1. Students read and select the events.
  2. Students summarise the content they select.
  3. Students translate into English the selected events.
  4. Students are able to create content on TimeToast.
Advantages of using TimeToast for this kind of activity

  • Contents are visually attractive and they are summarised.
  • Digital competence is developed.
  • Learning to learn competence is developed.
  • Cultural awareness competence is developed.
Steps followed to set this activity up

  1. Teacher selects the source.
  2. Teacher presents the tool (TimeToast) and the source.
  3. Students read the source.
  4. Students decide what events are going to include in the time line.
  5. Students design and share the time line.
Problems experienced and solution

  • Students need some time to practice with TimeToast to get used to it. For that reason, I selected a brief text online to work on it, selecting short sentences to include on TimeToast. Next time, longer texts will be used.
  • Problems to know how to use TimeToast: students with more problems using the computer will be paired with the most experienced ones.
Students reaction

They felt really impressed when they checked the result of their creations. All they were excited by the great layout.

Things to improve in the future

They will select the source autonomously, even they could select the topic of the time line.

How TimeToast has helped to achieve the objectives

  1. Students decided what information was relevant.
  2. Students wrote the key information in a single sentence.
  3. Students translate into English the selected events, with the help of an online dictionary.
  4. Students set the TimeToast up.

    I loved your blog! I didn’t expect a professional blog from this English course. So, I just can say congrats! I have seen other blogs from some colleagues but yours it’s one of my favourites for several reasons. The main reason it is because you organized the sequence and the time of the activities very well. Besides, you explained very well in your blog. I have enjoyed your first post about reading habits by the way!
    Maybe you should change the name of your blog. No need to mention this blog is from a course. You could name it with an english word. For sure, lot of teachers will check your blog!

  For this final activity, I have selected the great Time Toast by Mari Carmen P. https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/2696429 Now, my students are going to be encouraged to: Consult her Time Toast to check both the target layout they should get and the different Agatha Christie's novels to select one. Once they have selected a novel from A. Christie, they must investigate on the internet its synopsis. Sum up the novel to make a summary on TimeToast.com highlighting the main facts occurred. For this task, I divided the class into groups, to divide the amount of tasks necessary to create the comic. Steps followed to create the comic: Group 1 decide the plot. Group 2 design the scenes. Group 3 design the characters. Group 4 includes the dialogues, agreed with the rest of the class. The whole class revise the draft to check mistakes and possible modifications. Final version is published.   Learning objectives:  Express daily routines. Use of frequency adverbs. Talk about likes. Use the structure like + -ing. Foster imagination and creativity. Respect turn-taking and contribute to your group. The whole class decide and revise the dialogues, which are the practical way that proves the goal accomplishment. Students create, from a blank document, a complete comic, without following any model and discussing ideas. Students respect each other and share a common device to create the comic.
